Summary
In a world filled with spiritual attacks, emotional turmoil, and unseen battles, the shield of faith is your divine defense system. God Himself is your shield and your faith is more than belief—it’s a protective force in the spiritual realm. The fiery darts may come as temptation, fear, anxiety, doubt, sickness, or accusations, but the shield of faith will extinguish them all.
Our Father in Heaven, Yahweh, is a shield to those who put their trust in Him (Proverbs 30:5). God is our protector, our provider, our rock, the God of all flesh. He is righteous and gracious and He does not change. God is our redeemer, our restorer, and our strength. He gives and He takes away. He owes us nothing and gives us everything. He is holy and perfect, slow to anger and great in mercy. Our God is righteous and full of compassion. Put your trust in Him!
What Is A Shield?
One of the Greek words for shield is thureos. It was a large shield used in Roman warfare that offered full-body protection—but only if lifted and used intentionally. Similarly, your faith must be active, not passive. When you take up your shield of faith, God, as your shield, guards your soul from demonic influence. A shield is a defensive and protective piece of armor that blocks the arrows sent from the kingdom of darkness. When used with the full spiritual armor of God, through your faith, trust, and obedience of the Heavenly Father, His only begotten son Christ Jesus, and His Holy spirit, you defeat the enemy.
What is Faith?
Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). It is the reliance on Christ for salvation in everything. Faith requires belief and action. Belief is a state of mind where you accept something as true and valid. Faith is a form of belief that involves trust, reliance, and commitment in the face of uncertainty or lack of evidence. Faith also requires obedience. We must be obedient to the God we serve, trusting that He will always make a way for us.
What Are the Fiery Darts of the Enemy?
When the enemy attacks, it is your faith in Jesus Christ that becomes a weapon that blocks those attacks. When you know that you serve a God who will always deliver you, protect you, provide for you, and will never leave you nor forsake you, you put your full confidence in Him; in everything. There is nothing that the enemy can do to steal your salvation. He can and will try but will not prevail. No weapon formed against you shall prosper, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ!
Fiery darts of the enemy can manifest in the forms of:
- Temptations and lies
- Fear, depression, anxiety, and or worry
- Guilt and or shame
- Doubt
- and others
What Does It mean to Take Up the Shield of Faith?
Your shield of faith will remain equipped through:
- Meditating on the living and powerful word of God (Hebrews 4:12)
- Declaring the promises of God (Romans 10:17)
- Trusting God's character even in storms (Hebrews 11:1)
- Obedience despite opposition (James 2:17)
- Prayer, fasting, and worship (Ezra 8:21-23, 2 Chronicles 20:22)
- Repentance (Acts 3:19; 1 John 1:9)
- Humbling yourself (2 Chronicles 7:14)
- Belief in the power of God's Holy Spirit
- Sharing your testimony (1 Peter 3:15)
- Putting off the old man and putting on the new (Ephesians 4:22-32; Colossians 3:8-10)
- Fellowship and unity with other obedient followers of Christ (Hebrews 10:24-25; Acts 2:42)
No matter what temptation the enemy throws your way, God has the final say. The enemy, Satan, will lie, cheat, manipulate, deceive, contradict, steal, kill and destroy, but God has the final say.
How to Strengthen Your Shield of Faith
What you feed will grow. What you starve will die. The more you feed your faith, the stronger your shield becomes. Faith is your firewall. It blocks, filters, and neutralizes demonic interference. The shield of faith responds with divine resistance. To keep your faith strong and effective, you must practice spiritual discipline daily.
- Read and meditate on scripture - Faith comes by hearing the Word (Romans 10:17)
- Pray in the spirit - Build up your faith (Jude 1:20)
- Speak declarations of truth - Your words activate spiritual law (Proverbs 18:21)
- Resist doubt - Take every thought captive to Christ and cast down imaginations (2 Corinthians 10:5)
- Stay connected to the body of Christ - Iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17)
When we pray, fast, meditate on the word of God, support and encourage others, worship, and fellowship with other believers, we strengthen our shield of faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance (Romans 8:25). Faith requires belief and action. Our actions prove our faith. Words without action are powerless and are considered dead faith.
